Rural Crawford County

Aside from its county seat of Van Buren, Crawford County is predominantly rural and is home to a number of small communities. The terrain of the county ranges from the rugged terrain and forested ridges of the Ozark Mountains to the flatter rolling farmland of the River Valley. Here you can find Lake Fort Smith, an Arkansas State Park – as well as the beautiful Boston Mountains and popular Mulberry River.

This is an agricultural county supported largely by soybeans, fruits, vegetables, cattle and poultry – making it a natural fit for the food processing and transportation companies that operate here. Tourism is also an important industry and is ever-growing as visitors are drawn to area lakes, rivers, mountains, valleys and scenic views.

The second largest community of Crawford County (the first being Van Buren) is the city of Alma. Alma sits at the junction of interstates 40 and 540, which gives it quick access to both Fort Smith and Fayetteville. The city features a strong school system. It is also home to a performing arts center, a water park, a boys and girls club and a public library.

Other small communities in Crawford County include Cedarville, Chester, Dora, Dyer, Kibler, Mountainburg, Mulberry, Natural Dam and Rudy. Other small school districts in the county include those of Cedarville, Mountainburg and Mulberry.
