Fort Smith, Arkansas

The Region’s scenic beauty is a hallmark of our quality of life, but is certainly not its only outstanding asset. Fort Smith is also noted for the strong work ethic of its citizens, the clean and progressive industry that drives the economy, a burgeoning tourism trade, a thriving business and retail base and a strong agricultural tradition. Our diverse and stable economic base prospers because of abundant natural resources, an educated workforce, professional medical facilities, award-winning schools, outstanding transportation network and quality of life.   ~   Fort Smith Chamber

Fort Smith lies on the Arkansas-Oklahoma state border at the junction of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers. The city was established as a western frontier military post in 1817 and became well-known for its role in settling the “Wild West.” Over time it became the second largest city in Arkansas and one of two county seats for Sebastian County.

Fort Smith also lies near the junction of interstates 40 and 540. This, coupled with regional air and rail services, has allowed it to grow into a major transportation hub – as well as a strong industrial center. Several big-name manufacturers and service-providers have settled here, lending their strength to the local economy and job market. With all of this in mind, it’s no surprise that Inc Magazine named Fort Smith to its ‘Top 25 small cities for doing business in America’ – but what you may find surprising is that Fort Smith has also been consistently named by both Forbes and Kiplinger as having one of the very lowest costs-of-living in the nation. Who can beat that combination?

Whether it’s the nearby natural attractions, the historical parks and landmarks, the strong business community, the diverse neighborhoods or the outstanding educational opportunities, Fort Smith’s amenities make it the ideal place to live, work and raise a family.
